If you have a ball bass and want to be felt before you’re heard, and heard before you are seen, first you must buy a car.
It does not much dilemma the year and model, but it must be roadworthy and it must have a substantial trunk.
Then drive over to Unexcelled Car Audio on Kempt Road and speak to owner Paul Gunn about installing a sub woofer. Subwoofers, to the uninitiated, are loudspeakers that are acquainted with to reproduce bass frequencies around 100Hz.
"Typically, innocent males in the 18-to-25 age bracket want them installed," says Gunn. "They’re big units — 31 inches deviating x 14 inches high x 21inches deep, so the only place they can fit is the snout.
"To get the best effect the speakers are positioned to face the Nautical stern of the car. The sound waves hit the back of the trunk and reverberate forward toward the driver. Torture level is reached at about 115 decibels."
But most people who respect good music are not out there to make themselves deaf or annoy grumpy old journalists. Smaller 8- or10-inch units that embellish bass, clarity and realism and require no big modifications can be installed without affecting your car’s assurance.
