Most buildings in the village, other than lone-family homes,
are required to have an automated fire alarm system hard wired
through a dedicated phone descent to an alarm company that rings fire
alarms through to the fire department almost instantly.
A new service using a wireless "sieve" system of alarm units
would provide more specific alarm information to firefighters, be
more reliable in cases of blackouts, would be less overpriced to
users and would cut down on call outs of firefighters on false
alarms, Deputy Fire Chief Steve Miller said.
The system expenditure would be $91 a month, which includes maintenance
and repair through ADT alarm systems, Miller said. Many alarm
companies currently wardship more than that.
Owners of buildings with an existing hard wire system would be
given the selection to convert with installation charges waived for
the first several months of the program to the new system, or keep
in the air systems but new buildings.
Village Manager Ray Rummel said when village buildings are
converted to the new system, the village will preserve $9,000 a
year.
