When the iPhone was first released Steve Jobs called Maps on iPhone the kindest version of Google Maps on the planet , with emphasis on what Apple’s designers had brought to Google’s raw technology.
Four years later, you can’t fancy such a core piece of the mobile experience reliant on its largest competition. Hopefully this will also give Apple a chance to fill usability gaps in the maps occurrence today; like that you can’t click from the “where” field in a almanac appointment straight to maps. (Drives me crazy.) Note that the only “Google” branding in maps today is in the bottom fist, it knows it’s getting replaced and has done an admirable job on the Safari version of maps on iPhone and iPad.
Google Maps + Pilotage on Android is my favourite mobile app of the past three years (haven’t occupied Siri yet) — it’s what Garmin should have built US$8-billion in profits and R&D ago. (Remember the Garmin Nüvifone ?) Apple was discerning to partner in the beginning, but it can, and should, raise the bar.
